A Visit to Mark Voelkel, APLD's Award-Winning Rhodes Residence Garden in July. On Saturday, July 14, 26 Chapter members and other designers visited the APLD-award-winning garden designed by our former Chapter vice-president Mark Voelkel – with two other gardens thrown in for good measure. Mark generously shared a great deal of information about the challenges each site presented. Many thanks to the officers for arranging transportation, to Mark for his time and the handouts he prepared, and the owners of these properties for letting us visit their gardens.

Chapter member Jane Berger, APLD, who is also a well-known garden writer, recently had her online blog singled out for recognition by Garden Design magazine's March 2006 as one of six international blogs in its "Blog Roll of Honor." As this article put it, "Gardening is a natural fit in this high-tech forum since gardeners always want to know more and love to share. But all garden blogs are not created equal. . . those created by knowledgeable writers can be magical reads and sources of solid information . . . Among these pro blogs are regional writings by people who garden with the same issues and plants as you -- Massachusetts gardeners won't want to miss Dreams and Bones for its regional flair. National blogs like the irreverent Garden Rant are broader, touching on bigger issues. Human Flower Project is a good examle of an international blog with fascinating glimpses into the art, culture, and ecology of gardeners around the world. Another way to group blogs is by subject; Garden Design Online keeps you up to date with the landscape design world . . . Hard-core design, landscape, events and locations by designer Jane Berger." Jane's blog has also just been included on the "Top Ten List" of Graham Rice's Transatlantic Gardener blog. Congratulations, Jane!

Mentors Sought for NOVA Students
Ron Cloer, who is working closely together with the Northern Virginia Community College's horticulture and landscape design program, is encouraging Chapter members to participate by offering a mentoring relationship with NVCC students. As a starting point, he is seeking APLD members who would be willing to talk informally once a month with current students and share tips or information on how to look for work in the landscape design field. In addition, he would like to pair advanced students with experienced designers to work on discrete projects from start to finish. This would not be a paid internship but rather a relationship that would be mutually beneficial to both designer and student. Chapter members interested in either of these opportunities are encouraged to contact Ron at 703-791-4450 or via e-mail at rcloer7@comcast.net.

CEU Information
Certified members take note: Information on continuing education programs that have been pre-approved for CEU credits by APLD can be found at www.apld.org under the "continuing education" link on the "Members Only" section.

Chapter Meetings

Locations for meetings will be announced via e-mail to the membership; some meetings are held in officers' homes, others on project locations, and others will be held at public meeting spaces in Maryland and Virginia.
